Biography

Dr. Xiaowei Chen graduated from Harbin Medical University, and later received his Master’s and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Peking Union Medical College, Peking Union Medical College, Peking Union Medical College. He is now the Chief Physician of Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Doctoral Supervisor.

Professional Experience

From 1998 to 2001, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Aging and Hearing Research, University of Rochester, USA. She has also traveled to Germany and the United States to study otologic surgery.

Honors and Awards

Dr. Xiaowei Chen is a member of the International Society for Microtia Reconstruction, a member of the Main Committee for Geriatric Hearing Care of the China Foundation for the Development of Hearing Medicine, and a member of the Standing Committee of the Hearing Implantation Sub-Committee of the China Council for Hearing Care.

Academic Achievements

Dr. Xiaowei Chen has nearly 40 years of clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of otological diseases (microtia, deafness, otitis media, tinnitus, vertigo, etc.). Dr. Chen specializes in minimally invasive cochlear implantation surgery to preserve residual hearing; early otoplasty for neonatal auricular malformations, early bone conduction hearing aid wearing for children with microtia; staged auricular reconstruction surgery and ear canal reconstruction and hearing reconstruction surgery; molecular genetic diagnosis of deafness and genetic counseling for patients with various congenital deafness and otologic deformity syndromes; surgery for otitis media, otosclerosis, and various types of middle-ear hearing rehabilitation surgery; and surgery for tinnitus, dizziness, vertigo, and other hearing disorders. He has also been involved in the diagnosis and treatment of tinnitus, vertigo and sudden deafness.

She has led the group to establish and standardize a series of standardized assessment systems for patients with congenital deafness/ear malformations, such as audiological assessment before and after auditory intervention, diagnostic imaging, and subjective satisfaction assessment. Formed an MDT team for the diagnosis and treatment of rare deafness/ear malformation syndromes associated with cardiac malformations. Formed and led the deafness genetic testing work and genetic counseling clinic in Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

So far, he has completed cochlear implantation surgery for nearly 1,000 cases of hearing-impaired people; has reshaped the outer ear for more than 600 patients with congenital auricular malformations; and has performed ear canal reconstruction and hearing reconstruction surgery and simultaneous bone conduction hearing aid implantation for more than 100 patients with bilateral conductive deafness, and adhered to the patient’s follow-up work.

She has published more than 100 academic papers in domestic and international academic journals, including more than 60 SCI papers. She has undertaken many scientific research projects on deafness/ear malformation, such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, China Health Innovation Project Fund and Peking Union Medical College Hospital Pro-Research Special Focus Cultivation.
