Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine (FM) at United Family Hospital is at the heart of United Family Healthcare.  It connects patients & families with specialist healthcare teams. As the term “Family Medicine” implies, these doctors’ scope of consultation is broad and comprehensive, covering both internal medicine and general surgery, women’s and children’s common diseases, and also, many other frequently-occurring diseases not named here.  Furthermore the diagnosis and treatment of patients covers all ages, from infants to the elderly.

Family Medicine physicians, (also known as General Practitioners (GPs) or Primary Care Providers (PCPs) can help patients resolve most of their medical issues. They provide effective treatment for minor diseases, have good knowledge of major diseases, treat acute illnesses, and provide continuous care for management of chronic diseases.

After more than 25 years of development and growth, the medical services of Beijing United Family Hospital are available in hospitals in multiple districts in Beijing, including Jiangtai Road Hospital, Datun Hospital, Dongcheng Hospital and many satellite clinics in Chaoyang, Xicheng, Haidian, Shunyi and Tongzhou districts. Adhering to the concept of evidence-based medicine, BJU follows the latest national and international  guidelines, and offers state-of-the-art expertise, and multidisciplinary team cooperation, to provide efficient, convenient, high-quality, seamless and comprehensive medical care for patients of all ages.

The BJU Family Medicine practitioners’ team is composed of physicians from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, China and other countries.  The team is not only skilled in diagnosing and treating common acute and chronic diseases, but also provides individualized preventive health care and health management services for timely identification of disease risks, and active intervention to preserve health.  This team’s services include provision of Primary Care. Primary Care includes coordinating the relationship between specialists and patients, and shouldering the responsibility of medical monitoring throughout the cycle of care.

BJU’s Family Medicine department’s  services include the following:

Preventive health care services

  • Individualized preventive care and health screening (e.g., annual check-up, pre-employment check-up, pre-insurance check-up, preconception counseling)
  • Immunization for both children and adults
  • Chronic disease screening and prevention
  • Assessment of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk
  • Cancer screening
  • Pre-travel consultation
  • Medical certificate (e.g., fit-to-fly certificate, pre-admission medical check-up for schools, medical examination for renewal of driving license)

Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions

  • Common infections in children and adults (e.g., acute otitis media, respiratory diseases,  acute gastritis, skin and soft tissue infection, urinary tract infection, …)
  • Headache, dizziness, tinnitus, chest discomfort, insomnia, fatigue
  • Breast nodules, thyroid nodules
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomachache, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, constipation
  • Muscle and joints disorders such as acute or chronic injury, neck pain, back pain.
  • Allergic conditions, such as hay fever
  • Common skin disorders

Chronic disease management

Including but not limited to the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of the following chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol disorders, gout, elevated uric acid, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, asthma, chronic bronchitis, gastrointestinal diseases, chronic pain.

Sexual health services

  • Common gynecological symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge, irregular menses, perimenopausal and postmenopausal symptoms
  • Contraceptive counselling
  • Preconception counseling
  • Treatment of genitourinary diseases
  • Sexually transmitted disease screening and treatment

Minor surgery

  • Including incision and drainage of abscess, laceration repair, skin biopsy, ingrown toenail removal, and wart removal.
